Why do young people drink acohol?
Parents complain that theri children drink because they it is a „smart, in-thing to do“, but it is also true that eighty percent of young people under eighteen are introduced to alcohol in the home. Since drinking is a social habit, parents think it is better for their children to sample alcohol at an early age so that they will get used to it. Instead of teaching them to drink in moderation, this seems to tempt teenagers to go out and buy drinks for themselves.
Generally speaking, young people have more money to spend nowadays. Some are given money by their parent, but many have part-time jobs. One teenager said that at the weekend he drinks as much alcohol as he can afford to buy.
Young people associate alcohol with glamour. Press, cinema and TV advertisements give the impression that people who drink are successful, make friends easily and enjoy themselves.
Boredom accounts for a lot of drinking. Some teenagers claim thet there is not a lot to do except drink. For maxy unemployed youngsters, drinking si a form of escapism. As one seventeen-year-old explained. „It´s something to do. It gbets you out of it all. There´s nothing to do, so why not have a drink and a fight?“
Who ´s to blame?
Drinkers become depressed and lethargic. After drinking all evening they suffer from hangovers and sickness. Heavy drinkers do damage to themselves and other people. Alcohol cen make them aggressive. It can upset their coordination and impair their jedgement. The British „lager lout“ is a common sight at football matches and an increasing danger on the roads: the typical drunken driver is male and aged under thirty. If a young person dies before the age of twenty-five, the chances are that it will be because of na alcohol-related problem.
What are the effects of excessive alcohol?
Under.eighteens who have been interviewed about their drinking habits report that they find it easy to buy drinks in pubs, supermarkets and off licences. In Britain only youngsters aged eighteen an over are permitted by law to purchase alcohol, but vendors rarely ask them to prove how old they are. If the regulations regarding the sale of alcohol to young people were tightened up, at least seventy-four percent of under-age drinkers would be stopped from breaking the law.
REASONS FOR TEENAGE ALCOHOLISM
They drink because they want to:

- easy to buy
